Lumber weight is volume times density: weight (lb) = ft³ × air-dry density (lb/ft³ at 12% moisture content). One board foot is 1/12 of a cubic foot, so a board foot weighs density ÷ 12 — about 5.6 lb for Kaneelhart and 0.9 lb for Balsa. Weights assume air-dried lumber at 12% moisture content (density = 62.4 × specific gravity × 1.12, which includes the bound water a dried board carries). Green (undried) lumber weighs substantially more.

Worked example

Ten white oak boards, each 8 ft long, 6 in wide, 4/4 (1 in) thick. Volume per board: 1 × 6 × 96 ÷ 1728 = 0.333 ft³, so ten boards are 3.33 ft³ (that's also 40 board feet). At 48 lb/ft³:

3.33 ft³ × 48 lb/ft³ ≈ 158 lb

That stack is a two-person carry and a meaningful load for roof racks — most factory crossbars are rated for 150–165 lb.

What drives lumber weight

Two things: how much wood substance is packed into each cubic foot, and how much water rides along with it. The densities in this calculator are derived from Wood Handbook specific gravity at 12% moisture content and quoted air-dry: density = 62.4 × specific gravity × 1.12, where the ×1.12 adds back the roughly 12% bound water a dried, acclimated board actually carries. That matches how lumber is weighed in practice and how references quote it. Green lumber is a different animal entirely: fresh off the saw, the same board can hold water equal to half or more of its dry weight, which is why a green slab that two people slid into a truck takes three to carry out.

Weight matters earlier in a project than most people expect. It decides whether a benchtop needs a helper to flip, whether a lumber rack's wall anchors are adequate, what shipping a flattened slab will cost, and whether that full sheet-goods-plus-hardwood haul exceeds your vehicle's payload. For rough planning, remember the board-foot shortcut: one board foot weighs the species density divided by 12 — about 4 lb for oak, white, white. Multiply by your tally and you have a stack weight before you ever touch a calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an 8-foot 2×4 weigh?
A kiln-dried softwood 2×4 actually measures 1.5″ × 3.5″, so 8 feet is about 0.29 ft³. At a typical framing-lumber density near 34 lb/ft³ (12% MC) that is roughly 10 lb. Pressure-treated or damp lumber can weigh half again as much.
Does moisture content change the weight?
Substantially. The densities here assume 12% moisture content — typical for dried, acclimated lumber. Freshly sawn (green) wood carries far more water and can weigh 35–100% more depending on species. If your stock feels cold and heavy off the mill truck, it is wetter and heavier than this estimate.
Why does the calculator use nominal or actual dimensions?
It uses exactly what you type. For weight you should enter ACTUAL measured dimensions — a surfaced 2×4 is 1.5″ × 3.5″. (That differs from board-foot pricing, which conventionally uses nominal or rough sizes; volume for weight has no such convention.)
Are hardwoods always heavier than softwoods?
No — the labels are botanical, not mechanical. Many hardwoods outweigh most softwoods, but the ranges overlap: some softwoods are denser than the lightest hardwoods. Check the species' actual density rather than trusting the category.
How do I convert lb/ft³ to kg/m³?
Multiply by 16.0185. A 47 lb/ft³ wood is about 753 kg/m³. The calculator already reports total weight in both pounds and kilograms.
